How to Write WebSite Content: Be Natural
February 1st, 2008How to write website content seems a fairly simple topic for me at this time of year: especially with a sore head (or ’sair heid’ as we say).
I have just recovered from the holiday period - especially New Year. Being a Scot, that takes us a long time from which to recover. This short post is about how to write content for your website.
When you are writing content for one of your web pages, write naturally. Don’t try to be erudite if you are not, and don’t try to emulate Keats or even Ernest Hemingway. Write as you would speak. Think of what you are trying to say, and then write it down as you think it - just as I am doing now. Did you notice the excellent grammar in the second paragraph? It might have been better to write ‘It takes us a long time to recover from’.
You decide which is best for the content of your website - the correct or the coloquial, according to the context and the audience it is aimed for. You are not writing to pass exams but to be understood by the majority of your web page visitors.
Then read it over and correct any typos, but otherwise leave it. That is what people want in their website content, not high school essays.
However, every piece of content you write for a web page must be targeted to a single keyword, and must be optimized for that keyword. You might know how to write content for your niche, but not how to optimize your keyword useage. Here is a simple rule that I always use and it seems to work:
Use the keyword once in the first 100 characters, use it again in the lst paragraph and once more every 400 words. Never more than that. Sounds daft? Perhaps, but I get results with that. The rest of your vocabulary should include lots of semantically similar words (words meaning approx. the same, if not exact synonyms).
I am not going to try to tell you what the content of your website should be - you know that better than me. Just keep in mind:
1. Keep it natural - write as you would speak.
2. Worry less about perfect grammar as being understood.
3. Sprinkle the keywords and don’t overuse them, or you will be downlisted.
4. Get somebody else to read and find out if they understand it.
5. Don’t write within a month of Hogmanay when your are still half drunk.

Otherwise keep practicing, because ulimatelty you will be able to write with authority on your experiences of what works and does not work. However, for the meantime, take advantage of the experience of others.
That’s all - I am now off to bed with the Anadin (Anagram of Anni Death). OMG!
